The Safe Room
He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, ‘He is my refuge and my fortress; my God, in Him I will trust.’ Surely He shall deliver you from the snare of the fowler and from the perilous pestilence. He shall cover you with His feathers, and under His wings you shall take refuge; His truth shall be your shield and buckler. You shall not be afraid of the terror by night, nor of the arrow that flies by day, nor of the pestilence that walks in darkness, nor of the destruction that lays waste at noonday. – Psalm 91:1-6.
Imagine the terror of a home invasion. Several people suddenly begin knocking down your door, or crash through a window. What do you do? Call 911? Of course, you should call 911 if you have time, and can reach a phone. But it will take several minutes for the police to reach you, and by then it may be too late. Because of this, there has developed a market for “safe rooms” built inside of homes. To the untrained eye, the safe rooms are unnoticeable; appearing to be closets, or bathrooms until needed. These safe rooms are often bullet proof, fire proof, and storm proof. Once you are in the safe room, home invaders cannot reach you, or harm you without powerful explosives. In Europe, some safe rooms come with the additional ability to allow the occupants to fight back by releasing gas, or by arming electrical grids.
A safe room sounds like a nice thing to have for some peace of mind in these times; however, most of us cannot afford something like that. So what do the rest of us do? We make the Lord our place of refuge. He will be our fortress when He is our dwelling place. The Psalmist makes this clear beginning in verse 9 of Psalm 91, “Because you have made the Lord, who is my refuge, even the Most High, your dwelling place, no evil shall befall you, nor shall any plague come near your dwelling….”
Our Lord is the ultimate safe room, protecting us not only from other people and storms, but also from the unseen terrors of this world. In addition, the safe room of the Lord is mobile, and it goes where you go. God provides not only for physical safety here on Planet Earth, but, when necessary, eternal safety as well.
Have you, through Jesus Christ, made the Lord God your safe room? Are you dwelling in Him each day, living with your eyes upon Jesus? When you do, you will be able to say with the Psalmist, “I will both lie down in peace and sleep; for You alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety (Psalm 4:8).”
