Surrounded
Therefore he sent horses and chariots and a great army there, and they came by night and surrounded the city. And when the servant of the man of God arose early and went out, there was an army, surrounding the city with horses and chariots. And his servant said to him, “Alas, my master! What shall we do?”
So he answered, “Do not fear, for those who are with us are more than those who are with them.” And Elisha prayed, and said, “Lord, I pray, open his eyes that he may see.” Then the Lord opened the eyes of the young man, and he saw. And behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha. So when the Syrians came down to him, Elisha prayed to the Lord, and said, “Strike this people, I pray, with blindness.” And He struck them with blindness according to the word of Elisha. – 2 Kings 6:14-18 NKJV.
The King of Syria was at war with Israel, but he had a problem with his war plans being given to the King of Israel. Of course, the King of Syria thought that he had a spy giving away this information. One of his servants revealed to him the truth about the situation. In 2 Kings 6:12 we are told, “…None, my lord, O king; but Elisha, the prophet who is in Israel, tells the king of Israel the words that you speak in your bedroom.” The King of Syria with this information sent his army to capture Elisha.
The Syrian army surrounded the house where Elisha and his servant were. There was, however, a big problem for the Syrians: “And behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.” An army of God was all around Elisha and his servant protecting them. Elisha prayed and the Syrians were struck with blindness.
Every day I pray that the hand of God would be upon me, surround me, and protect me. Soon after I had prayed this one morning, I stopped at a convenience store to fill my car with gas. I wasn’t paying much attention to what was happening around me when I looked up and found myself surrounded! Surrounded by 11 or 12 Oklahoma City police vehicles and many officers who had stopped for gas for their cars. They were probably in this area for the tactical driving course that is available near here. I felt a little like Elisha’s servant with my eyes suddenly being opened to see a visible example of God’s protection surrounding me.
Psalm 91 begins by saying in verses 1 and 2:
He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High
Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.
I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress;
My God, in Him I will trust.”
If you are a believer, the Lord God is your “refuge and my fortress.” Where is the “secret place of the Most High?” The “secret place of the Most High” is where God dwells. In the Tabernacle that the children of Israel carried with them God dwelled in the Holy of Holies above the Ark of the Covenant. Only a priest could enter that place. Today, if you are a believer, you are also a priest in that you can go directly in the Name of Jesus to your Heavenly Father. Hebrews 4:16 says “Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” As a believer you live in the presence of God and He is your refuge and fortress.
Trust in Him!
