Money Money Money

For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. – 1 Timothy 6:10 NKJV.

But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away! – 2 Timothy 3:1-5 NKJV.

Have you ever wanted to win the lottery? Probably most people, if they are honest with themselves, have thought about it. But maybe winning a huge amount of money is not the blessing that you might think.

Alyssa Mosley won a large amount of money in a lottery and the first thing she did was to take a trip to Paris where she bought a bunch of expensive clothes and other things. She says that with each purchase the joy from being able to buy things grew less and less. The more things that she bought the less happy she became. Mosley has found a renewed faith in God which has given her peace.

The New York Post article (03.19.25) tells of a couple of other lottery winners with similar disillusionment about the value of money.

Money is not necessarily evil and if used properly can accomplish much good. Of course, it is hard to live life in this world without having access to some money. As many have pointed out, money is not being condemned in these verses. What is being condemned is the love of money or you could say a life focus on obtaining money. At one point in my life one of my goals before I became a believer was to make a lot of money and to obtain all the toys that go along with having wealth. This is a trap that many fall into which robs them of peace, robs them of life.

What should our focus be in life? Hebrews 12:3 tells us “For consider Him who endured such hostility from sinners against Himself, lest you become weary and discouraged in your souls.” Jesus is the focus that we should have in life. When we have our life focused in on Jesus Christ the result will be as we are told 1 Timothy 6:6: “godliness with contentment” which is “great gain.” That my friends is true success!
