Heart Food
A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings forth evil. For out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks. – Luke 6:45 NKJV.
Researchers in New Mexico have discovered while testing students that those with certain chemicals (or higher levels of those chemicals) in their brains scored five to six points higher than other students on IQ tests. It appears that what you eat does matter in terms of brain power. There were five chemicals identified as essential for healthy brains ranging from omega 3 fatty acids to B vitamins. By eating the right diet, you would be able to have a healthy brain.
It appears that what is true in the physical is true in the spiritual realm as well. It does matter what we receive as spiritual input. If we put good stuff in, then good stuff will come out. If we put bad stuff in, then bad stuff will come out. Just as with the physical, there are some things we can put into our lives which will improve our spiritual health.
Here are some of those spiritual necessities (Not necessarily in the order of importance.):
The Word of God (Matthew 4:4).
Prayer (Luke 18:1).
Church (Hebrews 10:24-25).
Service (Galatians 6:9-10; 1 Corinthians 15:58).
Right Thinking (Philippians 4:8).
What have you been storing up in your heart? Proverbs 4:23 tells us:
“Keep your heart with all diligence,
For out of it spring the issues of life.”
The Message, which is like a commentary, has Proverbs 4:23 as: “Keep vigilant watch over your heart; that’s where life starts. Don’t talk out of both sides of your mouth; avoid careless banter, white lies, and gossip. Keep your eyes straight ahead; ignore all sideshow distractions. Watch your step, and the road will stretch out smooth before you. Look neither right nor left; leave evil in the dust.”
